WHO Director-General <strong>Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/strong> expressed deep concern at a press briefing, highlighting the <strong>immediate impact on HIV treatment, polio eradication, and responses to infectious disease outbreaks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HIV Treatment Disruptions and Public Health Setbacks<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the most significant consequences is the suspension of funding to <strong>PEPFAR (the President\u2019s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief)<\/strong>, which has caused:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Immediate halts to HIV treatment, testing, and prevention services<\/strong> across 50 countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clinic closures and job losses<\/strong> among health workers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exclusion of prevention programs for at-risk groups<\/strong>, despite exemptions for life-saving treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tedros urged the <strong>US government to reconsider its funding approach<\/strong>, warning that without alternative solutions, millions of vulnerable people will lose access to essential health services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ebola Outbreak in Uganda<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning to the <strong>Ebola outbreak in Uganda<\/strong>, Tedros reported <strong>nine confirmed cases and one death<\/strong>. The humanitarian crisis has significantly weakened the health system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Only one-third of those in need can access health services<\/strong> in North and South Kivu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infectious diseases like mpox and cholera pose increasing risks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Severe shortages of medicines and fuel<\/strong> are hindering WHO\u2019s ability to respond effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Progress in Childhood Cancer Treatment<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid the challenges, WHO announced a <strong>major breakthrough in childhood cancer treatment<\/strong> in low and middle-income countries. As part of the <strong>Global Initiative on Childhood Cancer<\/strong>, WHO has begun distributing <strong>free cancer medications<\/strong> to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mongolia and Uzbekistan<\/strong> (first recipients).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Four additional countries<\/strong> in the coming months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The program, developed in partnership with <strong>St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital<\/strong>, aims to <strong>reach 120,000 children in 50 countries over the next five to seven years<\/strong>, bridging the survival gap between high-income and low-income nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Call for Immediate Action<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO has called on <strong>the global community to step up support<\/strong>, especially as US funding cuts threaten progress in global health.
