Among them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>36.4 million refugees<\/strong>, including 30.5 million under <strong>UNHCR\u2019s mandate<\/strong> and 5.94 million <strong>Palestine refugees under UNRWA<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>62.1 million internally displaced people<\/strong> who have fled violence but remain within their home countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>6.08 million asylum seekers<\/strong> waiting for refugee status.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5.6 million Venezuelan refugees or others in need of international protection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures reflect an <strong>alarming trend<\/strong>, with <strong>displacement far outpacing solutions<\/strong>. In the 1990s, about <strong>1.5 million refugees<\/strong> were able to return home annually; today, that number has fallen to <strong>385,000 per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Defining a Refugee<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under international law, a <strong>refugee<\/strong> is someone who has fled their country due to <strong>a well-founded fear of persecution<\/strong> based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. Stateless individuals who are outside their country of habitual residence and unable to return also qualify for refugee protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Who We Are: 70 Years of the UN Refugee Agency\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2xepu2fQbUM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Displacement Situations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>2023<\/strong>, approximately <strong>90% of newly displaced people<\/strong> came from just <strong>seven major crises<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Afghanistan<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Latin America and the Caribbean<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Myanmar<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Somalia<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sudan<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ukraine<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>five largest refugee populations<\/strong> by country of origin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Syria (6.5 million refugees)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Afghanistan (6.1 million)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ukraine (6 million)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Venezuela (5.6 million)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>South Sudan (2.2 million)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in <strong>1950<\/strong>, <strong>UNHCR<\/strong> was originally mandated for only three years to assist <strong>Europeans displaced by World War II<\/strong>. However, with <strong>new crises emerging<\/strong>, its mission has <strong>expanded globally<\/strong>. Today, UNHCR:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Operates in <strong>135 countries<\/strong> with over <strong>18,000 staff<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides <strong>protection and assistance to nearly 59 million people<\/strong>, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and stateless individuals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is active in <strong>Asia and Africa<\/strong>, where the <strong>majority of refugees<\/strong> originate and reside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Role of UNRWA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)<\/strong> was established in <strong>1949<\/strong> to provide services to <strong>Palestine refugees<\/strong> in Gaza, the West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. The agency delivers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Education, healthcare, and social services<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emergency assistance<\/strong> during crises.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure and development projects<\/strong> for refugee communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As of 2023<\/strong>, UNRWA serves <strong>nearly 6 million Palestine refugees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Funding Challenges<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Following allegations of <strong>UNRWA staff involvement in the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel<\/strong>, several nations <strong>suspended funding<\/strong>. Its <strong>four objectives<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reduce pressures on host countries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enhance refugee self-reliance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expand third-country resettlement opportunities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support safe and dignified voluntary return<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>At the <strong>2023 Global Refugee Forum<\/strong>, over <strong>1,600 pledges<\/strong> were made, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>$2.2 billion in new financial commitments<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>$250 million from private sector donors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Refugees and Climate Change<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While <strong>conflict and persecution<\/strong> remain the primary causes of displacement, <strong>climate change is an emerging driver of forced migration<\/strong>.
