After years of negotiations, the agreement was finalized during the latest session of the <strong>UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan sets ambitious targets: achieving <strong>net-zero emissions from maritime shipping by 2050<\/strong>, with formal adoption expected in <strong>October 2025<\/strong> and implementation starting <strong>in 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Elements of the New Framework<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The new measures, which will apply to <strong>large vessels over 5,000 gross tonnage<\/strong> (responsible for 85% of maritime CO\u2082 emissions), include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mandatory global fuel standards<\/strong>: Shipping companies must progressively lower the greenhouse gas intensity of their marine fuels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Industry-wide carbon pricing<\/strong>: High-emission vessels will be required to purchase &#8220;remedial units&#8221; to offset their excess emissions, while ships using near-zero or zero-emission technologies will benefit from financial rewards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This dual system is designed to <strong>create strong market incentives<\/strong> for the transition toward cleaner fuels and sustainable shipping practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges and Breakthrough<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Negotiations in London were intense. Some countries, including the United States, initially opposed the proposal.
