Many perished during the horrific transatlantic journey. Families were shattered, communities destroyed, and generations condemned to slavery, all in the pursuit of profits fueled by <strong>racist ideologies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the transatlantic slave trade formally ended, its legacy persists, with racial inequalities and economic disparities stretching across centuries and continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Financial Burden That Followed Freedom<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlighting the injustices that continued even after abolition, Guterres reminded the Assembly that formerly enslaved people often received <strong>no compensation<\/strong>, and some\u2014like Haiti\u2014were forced to <strong>pay indemnities<\/strong> to those who once enslaved them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haiti\u2019s crippling debt, imposed by former colonial powers, locked the young nation into <strong>generations of economic hardship<\/strong>, a burden still felt today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Call for Concrete Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Secretary-General urged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Full implementation<\/strong> of the <strong>International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Active measures<\/strong> against racism, discrimination, and economic exclusion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Honest education<\/strong> about the history and legacy of slavery in schools worldwide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAcknowledging this truth is essential for addressing past wrongs, healing the present, and building a future of dignity and justice for all,&#8221; Mr. Guterres stressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Echoes of Injustice Today<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phil\u00e9mon Yang<\/strong>, President of the General Assembly, reinforced these concerns, warning that despite abolition, the scars of slavery endure through <strong>inequities in housing, employment, healthcare, and education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He called for <strong>concrete policies<\/strong>, not just acknowledgments, to confront these disparities head-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Education<\/strong> plays a critical role, Yang added, urging that histories of slavery and its aftermath be incorporated into curricula globally to help fight ignorance and prejudice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Ark of Return: Honoring the Victims<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s observance also celebrated the <strong>tenth anniversary<\/strong> of the <strong>Ark of Return<\/strong>, a solemn white marble memorial at <strong>UN Headquarters<\/strong> in New York, designed by Haitian-American architect <strong>Rodney Leon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The monument stands as a tribute to the <strong>resilience and resistance<\/strong> of those who suffered and serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against racism and injustice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New Visions for Remembrance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka<\/strong> called for remembrance to be more than symbolic. Proposing a <strong>&#8220;Heritage Voyage of Return&#8221;<\/strong>, Soyinka envisioned repurposed transatlantic routes as pathways for education, culture, and healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, young American poet <strong>Salome Agbaroji<\/strong> urged African descendants to reclaim their narratives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTurn the tide, flip the phrase, and reclaim our personhood and stories,\u201d she declared.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She emphasized that the value of people of African descent extends far beyond the labor they provided under oppression, highlighting the vibrancy of their cultures, innovations, and achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The United Nations&#8217; message is clear<\/strong>: remembering the victims of slavery must lead to real change.
