The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker T\u00fcrk, has delivered a stark warning about the state of human rights and the global order, calling out the growing \u201cglorification of violence\u201d and widespread efforts to weaken the rule of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an address to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, T\u00fcrk cautioned that the international community is facing a critical moment. \u201cNo one is safe when human rights are under attack,\u201d he emphasized, urging world leaders to recognize the danger of allowing violations to go unchecked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rule of Law Under Siege<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

T\u00fcrk expressed deep concern about countries disregarding international norms that were established to prevent global conflict after World War II. He criticized the normalization of human rights violations and warned that when laws are applied inconsistently, it undermines the legal order for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From militarized displays to rising pro-war rhetoric, the UN rights chief noted a global shift toward authoritarianism and repression. \u201cSome States are becoming an extension of their ruler\u2019s personal power,\u201d he said, highlighting the urgent need for governments to recommit to the principles of peace, justice, and accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violations Across the Globe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During his speech, T\u00fcrk gave an overview of human rights crises unfolding around the world:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Gaza<\/strong>: He described the area as a \u201cgraveyard,\u201d citing mass civilian deaths and calling for an immediate halt to arms transfers to Israel that may breach international law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Sudan<\/strong>: Civilians in El Fasher remain under relentless bombardment, with the risk of further atrocities looming.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Myanmar<\/strong>: Four years after the military coup, the population continues to suffer severe rights violations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Ukraine<\/strong>: Escalating drone attacks have intensified the impact of Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Afghanistan<\/strong>: Women and girls have been nearly erased from public life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • West Africa<\/strong>: Anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is on the rise, and restrictions on civil freedoms are increasing ahead of several national elections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • China<\/strong>: No meaningful progress has been made to address the rights of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Migration<\/strong>: Forced returns of refugees, including Afghans and Rohingya Muslims, have occurred in countries like Iran, Pakistan, and India. European countries and the United States were also cited for tightening asylum measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Democratic Rights at Risk<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    T\u00fcrk also raised alarms over the shrinking space for political opposition, press freedom, and peaceful assembly in countries preparing for upcoming elections. He pointed to worrying trends in Cameroon, Tanzania, Uganda, and several others where repression is increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Call to Action<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Calling for renewed global commitment to human rights, the UN rights chief underscored the importance of teaching future generations that these freedoms are not optional\u2014they are universal birthrights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
