{"id":1194,"date":"2025-09-18T11:23:32","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T11:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brhrd.be\/?p=1194"},"modified":"2025-10-18T10:13:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T10:13:30","slug":"no-end-expected-to-floods-and-storms-as-global-heating-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brhrd.be\/?p=1194","title":{"rendered":"\u2018No End\u2019 Expected to Floods and Storms as Global Heating Continues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Date:<\/strong> 18 September 2025<br><strong>Category:<\/strong> Climate and Environment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The world\u2019s water systems are under mounting stress from climate change, with floods, storms, and droughts increasingly threatening lives and livelihoods across the globe, the <strong>UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO)<\/strong> warned on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWater-related hazards continue to cause major devastation this year,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Celeste Saulo<\/strong>, WMO Secretary-General. <em>\u201cUnfortunately, we see no end to this trend.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rising Temperatures, Rising Risks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The WMO\u2019s latest report on the state of global waterways confirms that <strong>2024 was the hottest year in 175 years of record-keeping<\/strong>, with average surface temperatures <strong>1.55\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels (1850\u20131900)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hotter air holds more moisture, intensifying rainfall and making severe floods and storms more frequent. Recent disasters include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Monsoon flooding in Pakistan<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flash floods in Bali, Indonesia<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deadly flooding in South Sudan<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Storm Boris and Beyond<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The legacy of <strong>Storm Boris<\/strong> in September 2024 still looms large. The storm triggered <strong>once-in-a-century floods<\/strong> across central and eastern Europe, displacing tens of thousands. Yet experts warn such rare disasters are now likely to occur <strong>more often than statistics once suggested<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cA \u2018century event\u2019 happened \u2013 but statistics show extreme events may become more frequent,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Stefan Uhlenbrook<\/strong>, WMO Director of Hydrology.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Himalayan and Amazon Disruptions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Other examples of climate-driven disruption include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Himalayan regions (Himachal Pradesh, Jammu &amp; Kashmir):<\/strong> Early and extreme monsoon rains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amazon Basin:<\/strong> Severe drought worsened by El Ni\u00f1o.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>North America, Mexico, southern Africa:<\/strong> Below-average rainfall, compounding water insecurity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While El Ni\u00f1o contributed, WMO scientists stress that <strong>climate change is the primary driver of extreme droughts and floods worldwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Connected World, A Broken Cycle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The WMO report found wetter-than-normal conditions in <strong>Africa\u2019s Lake Victoria region, Kazakhstan, southern Russia, Pakistan, India, Iran, and northeastern China<\/strong>. At the same time, <strong>only one-third of the world\u2019s river basins<\/strong> reported normal levels, underscoring widespread water cycle disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glaciers are retreating at alarming rates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2024, glaciers lost <strong>450 gigatonnes of ice<\/strong> \u2013 equal to <strong>180 million Olympic swimming pools<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This added <strong>1.2 mm to global sea levels<\/strong>, threatening hundreds of millions in coastal regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201c2024 was the third straight year with widespread glacial loss,\u201d<\/em> Ms. Saulo said, warning of growing flood risks worldwide.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Urgent Need for Data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The WMO emphasized that <strong>better monitoring of streamflow, groundwater, soil moisture, and water quality<\/strong> is essential.
