The high-level event will bring together ministers, economists, and industry leaders to explore concrete strategies to restore global economic stability, relieve debt distress, and redirect investment toward real human and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe are witnessing a transformational shift in multilateral trade,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Rebeca Grynspan<\/strong>, UNCTAD\u2019s Secretary-General. <em>\u201cDecisions made during UNCTAD 16 will influence the direction of trade and development policy for years to come.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restoring Predictability in Global Trade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Grynspan cautioned that <strong>policy uncertainty and rapid shifts in trade rules<\/strong> can be even more disruptive than tariffs \u2014 discouraging investment, eroding competitiveness, and eliminating jobs in developing economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the geopolitical turbulence, she noted a degree of resilience in early 2025:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Global trade grew by approximately $500 billion<\/strong> in the first half of the year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Goods trade increased by 5%, services by 6%, and South\u2013South trade (excluding China) by 9%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, she warned that confidence must be restored if smaller economies are to plan and invest effectively in the years ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Escalating Debt Crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The financial outlook remains deeply concerning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cAround 3.4 billion people live in countries that spend more on servicing their debt than on health and education,\u201d<\/em> Ms. Grynspan said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She called for the creation of a <strong>fairer and more predictable financial system<\/strong>, highlighting several initiatives under discussion, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Establishing a <strong>Borrowers\u2019 Club<\/strong> to enhance the negotiating power of developing countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expanding access to <strong>affordable, long-term capital<\/strong> to support sustainable growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building on outcomes from the <strong>Financing for Development Conference<\/strong> held in July.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rethinking Investment Priorities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Grynspan also warned that <strong>foreign direct investment (FDI)<\/strong> in developing nations is not only declining but remains overly concentrated in a few traditional industries and regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThe goal is not just to attract investment, but to attract the right kind of investment,\u201d<\/em> she emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That means prioritizing sectors that create long-term social and environmental value, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Healthcare, education, and clean water access<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agriculture, food security, and digital transformation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>She also pointed out that <strong>digital trade and data flows now underpin over 60% of global GDP growth<\/strong>, but warned that excessive market concentration in cloud computing and AI threatens to exclude developing nations unless inclusivity becomes a policy priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UNCTAD 16: A Defining Moment for Global Cooperation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Geneva conference will host around <strong>100 countries<\/strong>, including <strong>60 ministers and 40 vice-ministers<\/strong>, with <strong>1,700 participants<\/strong> expected.
