2025 \u2013 UNCTAD<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Global economic growth is expected to drop to <strong>2.6% in 2025<\/strong>, down from <strong>2.9% in 2024<\/strong>, according to a new analysis by the <strong>UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)<\/strong>.<br>The report warns that <strong>financial market volatility and geopolitical tensions<\/strong> are increasingly shaping global trade, placing developing economies under heavy strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNCTAD Secretary-General <strong>Rebeca Grynspan<\/strong> stressed that trade today is driven not only by supply chains but also by <strong>credit systems, currency markets, and capital flows<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key pressures highlighted in the report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Developing countries face <strong>high borrowing costs<\/strong>, unstable financial conditions, and <strong>climate-related economic risks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>States exposed to repeated climate shocks now pay an extra <strong>$20 billion annually in interest<\/strong>, due to increased risk perception.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The US dollar\u2019s dominance is intensifying: its use in <strong>SWIFT transactions<\/strong> rose from 39% to about <strong>50%<\/strong> in five years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While this can provide stability during global shocks, it also deepens developing countries\u2019 vulnerability to <strong>US financial cycles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Modern slavery reaches 50 million people worldwide<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery (2 December), UN Secretary-General <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/strong> warned that slavery remains a <strong>global emergency<\/strong>, not a historical footnote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>50 million people<\/strong> are trapped in modern forms of slavery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forced labour generates <strong>$236 billion in global profits<\/strong>\u2014effectively stolen wages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women and children remain disproportionately affected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern slavery includes <strong>human trafficking<\/strong>, <strong>sexual exploitation<\/strong>, <strong>forced marriage<\/strong>, <strong>child labour<\/strong>, and the <strong>recruitment of children in armed conflict<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regional estimates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Asia &amp; Pacific:<\/strong> 15.1 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Europe &amp; Central Asia:<\/strong> 4.1 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Africa:<\/strong> 3.8 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Americas:<\/strong> 3.6 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Arab States:<\/strong> 0.9 million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Guterres urged governments to intensify efforts to dismantle trafficking networks and protect vulnerable communities facing <strong>poverty, discrimination, conflict, or climate-driven displacement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>80% of agricultural jobs in Latin America remain informal \u2013 ILO &amp; FAO<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A new joint report by the <strong>International Labour Organization (ILO)<\/strong> and the <strong>UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/strong> reveals that <strong>over 80% of agricultural employment in Latin America<\/strong> continues to be informal, leaving workers without legal protection or social security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key findings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>86.4% of women<\/strong> in agriculture work informally (vs. 78% of men)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sector accounts for <strong>46% of all child labour<\/strong> in the region<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than half of agricultural workers have <strong>low levels of education<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite limited progress since 2019, informal employment remains widespread, especially among <strong>women, youth, and older rural workers<\/strong>.<br>ILO and FAO are urging the development of integrated policies that transform agriculture into a sector capable of delivering <strong>decent work, food
