The UN\u2019s top human rights official, Volker T\u00fcrk<\/strong>, has issued a stark warning that civilians trapped inside Sudan\u2019s El Fasher may still be facing atrocities<\/strong>, despite reports that international mediators have helped broker a ceasefire proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement released Friday, the High Commissioner said that traumatised civilians are being prevented from leaving the city<\/strong>, raising fears that summary executions, rape, and ethnically motivated attacks<\/strong> continue inside El Fasher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Fasher, once the last major stronghold of Sudan\u2019s military government in Darfur, fell to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)<\/strong> militia on 23 October 2025<\/strong>, intensifying a conflict already marked by massive displacement, civilian targeting, and violations of international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atrocities reported inside and outside the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

T\u00fcrk emphasized that even those who managed to escape the city are encountering \u201cunimaginable cruelty\u201d<\/strong> along the exit routes, which have become hotspots for violence and abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that civilian deaths, destruction, and widespread displacement have risen sharply since the RSF takeover. Developments on the ground, he warned, suggest \u201cclear preparations for intensified hostilities,\u201d<\/strong> putting already-suffering civilians at further risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possible war crimes and crimes against humanity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Chaloka Beyani<\/strong>, told UN News that credible allegations point to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Massive violations of human rights law<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Direct attacks on civilians<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Serious breaches of international humanitarian law<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    On Friday, UN independent experts said they were \u201cappalled\u201d<\/strong> by reliable reports of ethnically targeted summary executions<\/strong>, along with \u201csadistic levels\u201d of sexual violence<\/strong> in and around El Fasher.
    They stressed that these acts constitute war crimes<\/strong> and may amount to crimes against humanity<\/strong>, calling for urgent, independent investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ceasefire talks overshadowed by renewed attacks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Media reports say the RSF agreed on Thursday to a ceasefire proposal backed by the United States and Arab countries.
    However, Sudan\u2019s national army has not endorsed the deal, and explosions were still being reported<\/strong> around government-held areas of Khartoum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Arms embargo and urgent international action<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    T\u00fcrk reiterated that the UN Security Council\u2019s arms embargo is clear<\/strong>, stating that all military support enabling parties to commit violations must stop immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He called for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • An immediate end to violence<\/strong> in Darfur and Kordofan<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Bold and urgent international action<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Full accountability for perpetrators<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      The UN Human Rights Council<\/strong> is scheduled to hold a special session on 14 November<\/strong> to address the situation in and around El Fasher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
