{"id":1303,"date":"2026-01-28T11:19:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T11:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brhrd.be\/?p=1303"},"modified":"2026-02-02T11:20:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T11:20:49","slug":"who-urges-higher-taxes-on-sugary-drinks-and-alcohol-to-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brhrd.be\/?p=1303","title":{"rendered":"WHO Urges Higher Taxes on Sugary Drinks and Alcohol to Save Lives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sugary drinks and alcohol are <strong>too cheap and too widely available<\/strong> in much of the world, fuelling rising rates of obesity, diabetes, cancer and injury, the <strong>World Health Organization<\/strong> warned on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, WHO is urging governments to <strong>significantly increase and redesign taxes<\/strong> on sugar-sweetened beverages and alcoholic drinks, following the release of two new global reports showing that current tax levels remain <strong>insufficient<\/strong> in many regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHealth taxes have been shown to reduce consumption of these harmful products, helping to prevent disease and reduce the burden on health systems,\u201d said <strong>Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/strong>, WHO Director-General.<br>\u201cAt the same time, they generate revenue that can be invested in health, education and social protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the new reports show<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sugary drinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO report on sugar-sweetened beverage taxes finds that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>116 countries<\/strong> tax sugary drinks such as sodas and carbonated beverages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, many <strong>high-sugar products escape taxation<\/strong>, including:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>100% fruit juices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweetened milk drinks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ready-to-drink coffees and teas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, consumers often switch to equally sugary alternatives that remain untaxed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alcohol<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The report on alcohol taxation shows that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>167 countries<\/strong> tax beer, wine and spirits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yet alcohol has become <strong>more affordable or stayed the same price<\/strong> in most countries since 2022<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is largely because taxes are <strong>not adjusted for inflation or rising incomes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why it matters for public health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Regular consumption of sugary drinks is strongly linked to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Excess weight and obesity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cardiovascular disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dental decay and osteoporosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcohol consumption is associated with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased risks to maternal and child health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher exposure to communicable and non-communicable diseases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mental-health harm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater risk of injury and violence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO stresses that <strong>raising taxes consistently leads to lower consumption<\/strong> of these harmful products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Proof that taxes work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO Director-General Tedros highlighted the <strong>United Kingdom<\/strong> as a successful example. After introducing a sugary drinks tax in <strong>2018<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sugar consumption fell<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The policy generated <strong>\u00a3338 million in revenue in 2024 alone<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obesity rates declined among <strong>girls aged 10\u201311<\/strong>, particularly in <strong>deprived communities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A broader health push<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The call to raise beverage taxes is part of a <strong>new WHO health initiative<\/strong> aimed at reducing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tobacco use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harmful alcohol consumption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive intake of sugary drinks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO is urging governments to see health taxes not as punishment, but as a <strong>proven, cost-effective tool<\/strong> to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save lives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce pressure on health systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fund essential public services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sugary drinks and alcohol are too cheap and too widely available in much of the world, fuelling rising rates of obesity, diabetes, cancer and injury, the World Health Organization warned on Tuesday.
