Sugary drinks and alcohol are too cheap and too widely available<\/strong> in much of the world, fuelling rising rates of obesity, diabetes, cancer and injury, the World Health Organization<\/strong> warned on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, WHO is urging governments to significantly increase and redesign taxes<\/strong> on sugar-sweetened beverages and alcoholic drinks, following the release of two new global reports showing that current tax levels remain insufficient<\/strong> in many regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cHealth taxes have been shown to reduce consumption of these harmful products, helping to prevent disease and reduce the burden on health systems,\u201d said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/strong>, WHO Director-General.
\u201cAt the same time, they generate revenue that can be invested in health, education and social protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

What the new reports show<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sugary drinks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The WHO report on sugar-sweetened beverage taxes finds that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • 116 countries<\/strong> tax sugary drinks such as sodas and carbonated beverages<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • However, many high-sugar products escape taxation<\/strong>, including:\n
      \n
    • 100% fruit juices<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Sweetened milk drinks<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Ready-to-drink coffees and teas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      As a result, consumers often switch to equally sugary alternatives that remain untaxed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Alcohol<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The report on alcohol taxation shows that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • 167 countries<\/strong> tax beer, wine and spirits<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Yet alcohol has become more affordable or stayed the same price<\/strong> in most countries since 2022<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • This is largely because taxes are not adjusted for inflation or rising incomes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
        \n\n\n\n

        Why it matters for public health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Regular consumption of sugary drinks is strongly linked to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • Excess weight and obesity<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Cardiovascular disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Dental decay and osteoporosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Alcohol consumption is associated with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Increased risks to maternal and child health<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Higher exposure to communicable and non-communicable diseases<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Mental-health harm<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Greater risk of injury and violence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            WHO stresses that raising taxes consistently leads to lower consumption<\/strong> of these harmful products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Proof that taxes work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            WHO Director-General Tedros highlighted the United Kingdom<\/strong> as a successful example. After introducing a sugary drinks tax in 2018<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • Sugar consumption fell<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • The policy generated \u00a3338 million in revenue in 2024 alone<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Obesity rates declined among girls aged 10\u201311<\/strong>, particularly in deprived communities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
              \n\n\n\n

              A broader health push<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

              The call to raise beverage taxes is part of a new WHO health initiative<\/strong> aimed at reducing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
