{"id":1309,"date":"2026-01-30T11:24:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T11:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brhrd.be\/?p=1309"},"modified":"2026-02-02T11:27:38","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T11:27:38","slug":"we-children-saw-things-no-one-should-ever-have-to-see-holocaust-survivor-tells-the-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brhrd.be\/?p=1309","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We Children Saw Things No One Should Ever Have to See\u2019: Holocaust Survivor Tells the UN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Holocaust survivor <strong>Marion Blumenthal Lazan<\/strong> delivered a deeply moving testimony at the United Nations Holocaust Memorial ceremony in New York, urging people everywhere to confront hatred by choosing <strong>\u201clove, respect and compassion\u201d<\/strong> in their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the General Assembly Hall alongside one of her great-grandchildren, Mrs. Lazan recounted her childhood under Nazi persecution\u2014describing a journey from a comfortable life in northwest Germany to detention, deportation, and survival in <strong>Bergen-Belsen concentration camp<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe children saw things that no one, no matter what the age, should ever have to see,\u201d she told delegates.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From ordinary life to persecution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Hoya, Germany, Mrs. Lazan described how her family\u2019s life changed dramatically after the <strong>Nuremberg Laws<\/strong> of 1935 stripped Jewish families of their rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>Kristallnacht<\/strong> in November 1938, their home was ransacked and her father was deported to <strong>Buchenwald concentration camp<\/strong>, released only weeks later because the family had secured emigration papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1939, the family fled to the Netherlands, hoping to reach the United States\u2014but history intervened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trapped and deported<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940, the family was interned in <strong>Westerbork transit camp<\/strong>, which later became a departure point for mass deportations to extermination camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEvery Tuesday morning, men, women and children were marched to the trains,\u201d she recalled.<br>\u201cOf the 120,000 deported from Westerbork, 102,000 never returned.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>January 1944<\/strong>, nine-year-old Marion and her family were transported in cattle cars to <strong>Bergen-Belsen<\/strong>, arriving on a freezing, rain-soaked night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Life in Bergen-Belsen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs. Lazan described conditions of <strong>extreme overcrowding, starvation, disease and terror<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>600 people crammed into barracks built for 100<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One thin blanket for two people in bitter winter cold<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimal food\u2014often just bread and watery soup<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No sanitation, soap, or privacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regular roll calls lasting all day without food or water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>She recalled treating frostbite with urine for warmth, tripping over uncollected bodies, and living in constant fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFear was the worst emotion to deal with,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A child\u2019s survival instincts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To cope, she created games of imagination. One superstition sustained her: if she could find <strong>four matching pebbles<\/strong>, it meant her family would survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her mother\u2019s courage and strength, she said, were decisive in her survival. She recalled a moment when boiling soup spilled onto her leg during a secret cooking attempt\u2014and how, at age ten, she knew that <strong>crying out could mean death<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Liberation and loss<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In spring 1945, the family was transported again\u2014this time toward extermination camps in Eastern Europe. After <strong>14 days without food or water<\/strong>, their train was liberated by the Soviet army near <strong>Troibitz<\/strong>, Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only <strong>500 of the 2,500 people<\/strong> on board survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though liberated, tragedy continued. Mrs. Lazan\u2019s father died of typhus six weeks later, after years of imprisonment and abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rebuilding life in the United States<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1948<\/strong>, Marion, her mother, and brother emigrated to the United States, settling in Illinois. Unable to speak English, she was placed in a fourth-grade class at age 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through determination, night work, and summer school, she graduated high school ranked among the top students in her class. She later married, raised a family, and today celebrates <strong>five generations of survival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A message to the world<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Holding the <strong>yellow star<\/strong> she was forced to wear as a child, Mrs. Lazan warned of the dangers of hatred and dehumanisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEach and every one of us must do everything in our power to prevent such hatred from recurring.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Her message was simple\u2014and urgent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cHow we treat, behave, and reach out to one another\u2014that is entirely up to us.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cDo not let negativity win.
