{"id":1315,"date":"2026-01-18T11:31:40","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T11:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brhrd.be\/?p=1315"},"modified":"2026-02-02T11:48:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T11:48:24","slug":"un-rights-chief-bears-witness-to-trauma-and-resilience-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brhrd.be\/?p=1315","title":{"rendered":"UN Rights Chief Bears Witness to Trauma and Resilience in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After nearly three years of devastating conflict, Sudan has fallen into what the UN human rights chief describes as <strong>\u201can abyss of unimaginable dimensions.\u201d<\/strong> Yet amid the suffering, he says, the resilience of the Sudanese people endures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking in Nairobi after a <strong>five-day mission to Sudan<\/strong>, <strong>Volker T\u00fcrk<\/strong>, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said he had witnessed <strong>\u201ca chronicle of cruelty unfolding before our very eyes\u201d<\/strong>, while also encountering extraordinary courage and solidarity among civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He urged <strong>all actors with influence<\/strong>\u2014including regional players and those supplying weapons or profiting from the conflict\u2014to take <strong>urgent action<\/strong> to end the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A people not broken<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. T\u00fcrk last visited Sudan in <strong>November 2022<\/strong>, when he was inspired by civil society leaders, particularly <strong>women and young people<\/strong> who led the 2018 revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, he said, the war between the <strong>Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)<\/strong> and the <strong>Rapid Support Forces (RSF)<\/strong> has affected every part of the country. Yet the core aspirations of the Sudanese people\u2014for <strong>peace, justice and freedom<\/strong>\u2014remain intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI bore witness in Sudan to the trauma of unspeakable brutality,\u201d he said,<br>\u201cbut also to the resilience and defiance of the human spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Young people on the frontlines of aid<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During his visit, Mr. T\u00fcrk met volunteers\u2014many of them young\u2014who are organising and delivering humanitarian assistance under extreme conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often facing <strong>bureaucratic obstruction, detention, and violence<\/strong>, they continue to support their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One volunteer told him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe price of war is being paid by young people. Sudanese youth are on the frontlines, serving those most in need.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Attacks on civilian infrastructure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The High Commissioner strongly condemned <strong>attacks on essential civilian infrastructure<\/strong>, including the <strong>Merowe dam and hydroelectric power station<\/strong>, which once supplied <strong>70 per cent of Sudan\u2019s electricity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeated drone strikes\u2014attributed to the RSF\u2014against such facilities, he warned, are <strong>serious violations of international law<\/strong> and may amount to <strong>war crimes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He called on both parties to immediately halt attacks on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Markets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shelters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other objects indispensable to civilian survival<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Displacement, grief and shattered childhoods<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. T\u00fcrk met people displaced from <strong>El Fasher<\/strong> in North Darfur, now living more than <strong>1,200 kilometres away<\/strong> in camps such as <strong>Al Afad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>four-year-old child<\/strong> who lost his hearing due to bombardment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>three-year-old<\/strong> who no longer smiles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A woman who saw her husband and only son killed and remains bedridden from trauma and a gunshot wound<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese are wounds that go far beyond the physical,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sexual violence as a weapon of war<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The rights chief described <strong>systematic sexual violence<\/strong> as one of the most horrifying features of the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn Sudan, women and girls\u2019 bodies have been weaponized,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He shared the testimony of *<em>Aisha<\/em> (20)**, who was abducted while fleeing El Fasher. Her brother was shot when he tried to protect her, and her mother beaten as she begged the attackers to take her instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexual violence, Mr. T\u00fcrk stressed, is being used deliberately as a <strong>weapon of war<\/strong>\u2014a grave crime under international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Risk of further atrocities<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. T\u00fcrk warned that crimes committed in <strong>El Fasher<\/strong> risk being repeated in the <strong>Kordofan region<\/strong>, where fighting has intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes amid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Famine conditions<\/strong> in <strong>Kadugli<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High risk of famine in <strong>Dilling<\/strong> and surrounding areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He also condemned the growing use of <strong>advanced weaponry<\/strong>, including drones, saying it is <strong>\u201cdespicable\u201d<\/strong> that vast sums are spent on arms instead of relieving civilian suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Militarisation and shrinking civic space<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The High Commissioner raised alarm over:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arming of civilians<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recruitment and use of <strong>children<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Targeting of <strong>journalists and civil society<\/strong> through intimidation and smear campaigns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Such trends, he warned, are accelerating the breakdown of Sudanese society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A plea to put people first<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. T\u00fcrk concluded by urging all parties to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protect civilians and civilian infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guarantee safe passage for those fleeing conflict<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow <strong>unimpeded humanitarian access<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Release civilians detained for alleged \u201ccollaboration\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Account for missing persons and treat detainees humanely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI urge all those involved to set aside power games and personal interests,\u201d he said,<br>\u201cand focus on the common interests of the Sudanese people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Human rights, he emphasized, must be <strong>central to ending the war and building sustainable peace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis is difficult,\u201d he acknowledged,<br>\u201cbut certainly not impossible\u2014with the resilience and power of the Sudanese people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>*Name changed for protection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After nearly three years of devastating conflict, Sudan has fallen into what the UN human rights chief describes as \u201can abyss of unimaginable dimensions.\u201d Yet amid the suffering, he says, the resilience of the Sudanese people endures.
