Sudan is now the world\u2019s most severe humanitarian emergency<\/strong>, the United Nations\u2019 top relief official warned at a donor conference in Washington, DC, calling for urgent funding and stronger diplomatic action as the conflict approaches its third year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToo many days of famine and brutality\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tom Fletcher<\/strong>, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, said the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)<\/strong> and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)<\/strong> has plunged millions into famine, displacement and extreme vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere have been too many days of famine, of brutal atrocities, of lives uprooted and destroyed,\u201d he said, highlighting that women and girls continue to face \u201cterrifying sexual violence.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fighting began in April 2023 and rapidly spread across a country already struggling with political instability, ethnic tensions and climate shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Move from concern to concrete action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Fletcher urged governments and regional powers to shift from statements of concern to practical measures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Increased humanitarian funding<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Political pressure for a ceasefire<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Guarantees of safe humanitarian access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The UN supports diplomatic efforts led by the \u201cQuad\u201d \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • United States<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Egypt<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Saudi Arabia<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • United Arab Emirates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      These efforts aim to secure a humanitarian truce and demilitarize key areas to allow aid to reach civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n

      \u201cThe guns must fall silent and a path to peace must be charted,\u201d Fletcher said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

      \n\n\n\n

      UN 2026 humanitarian response plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Under its 2026 response framework, the United Nations aims to reach more than 20 million people<\/strong> across Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      To do so, it requires approximately $2.9 billion<\/strong> in funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      However, money alone is not enough. Fletcher stressed that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Aid workers must have safe, unhindered access<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Civilians must be protected<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Blockades and bureaucratic obstacles must end<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        \u201cLet today be at last the signal that the world is uniting in solidarity for practical impact,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n\n\n\n

        Crisis intensifies on the ground<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        While diplomatic discussions continue, fighting has escalated in parts of South Kordofan. Media reports indicate government forces entered Kadugli<\/strong> after months of siege and recently broke the blockade of Dilling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Meanwhile, displacement continues to surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees<\/strong> (UNHCR):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • 11.7 million people<\/strong> have been forcibly displaced\n
            \n
          • 7 million internally displaced<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • 4.5 million have fled to neighbouring countries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            In camps and makeshift settlements, displaced families face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              \n
            • Severe food shortages<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Limited healthcare<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Inadequate water and sanitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Insufficient shelter<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Disrupted education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
